Every storm tide buries Tofino's wild Pacific beaches under drift nets, microplastic, and broken fishing gear. Our volunteer crews comb the shoreline kilometre by kilometre, hauling out debris by hand and logging every kilogram in open waste audits. The goal is simple and measurable: cleaner sand, safer wildlife, and data that tells us where the plastic is coming from.

Across five cleanups we have now cleared 6.2 km of shoreline and removed 640 kg of plastic and debris, just under halfway to our 1,600 kg target. Funds raised so far have covered gloves, grabbers, bins, and safe disposal fees. Reaching the full goal unlocks two more crews and a winter storm-debris sweep.

A class of students spent a low-tide morning with us learning to spot and safely remove microplastic from the wrack line. Their energy added 18 volunteers to our roster in a single day and turned a routine cleanup into a community event. Stewardship starts young, and Tofino’s next generation showed up.

Our second waste audit sorted everything we collected into categories before disposal. Derelict fishing gear made up nearly half the weight, with single-use plastics close behind. Logging the breakdown helps us trace where the debris originates so future cleanups can target the worst-hit coves first.
