On the black-sand beaches of Tortuguero, our patrols walk the tideline through the night to shield endangered sea turtle nests from poachers, predators, and washouts. Every clutch we relocate to the guarded hatchery is one step closer to a dawn release β palmfuls of hatchlings scrambling toward the surf. With local guardians trained and the community alongside us, we are turning one of Costa Rica's most vital nesting coasts into a stronghold for the next generation.

We closed out the quarter with 38 nests protected, 112 km of beach patrolled, and 1,840 hatchlings safely released at dawn into the surf. Hatch success in the guarded hatchery is holding well above what the open beach allows, and predation losses are down sharply on patrolled stretches. With the goal set at 6,000 hatchlings, reaching our funding target lets us extend patrols to the southern beaches before peak season.

Nine community members finished our nest-monitoring and anti-poaching course, covering safe handling, data logging, and night-patrol safety. Several are former egg collectors who now earn a steady stipend protecting the same beaches. Their local knowledge of the tides and channels has already sharpened where and when we patrol.

Thanks to early supporters, we built and fenced a shaded hatchery just above the high-tide line and relocated our first vulnerable clutches into it. Local families came out to help haul materials and learn how the buried nests are tracked and dated. Seeing neighbors who once saw the beach as off-limits now guarding it is exactly the shift we hoped for.
